COMMOTION: A CONTEMPORARY TEXTILE ART SHOW JUNE 8 - JULY 3, 2021

Exhibit Concept:

In these turbulent times, many of us are reeling from the commotion that surrounds us - be it political, environmental, or personal. To the artist it might evoke a riot of colour, textures, or forms. Commotion can be noise, mayhem and upheaval, but it can also be children’s vitality that brings joy, the hurly-burly of a busy city street or even the clamor of a symphony getting ready to play.

What does the idea of “Commotion” mean to you? Is it loud and overwhelming? Pandemonium or turmoil? Or exciting, lively, and full of unexpected delights? Show us how you react to the idea of commotion. We’re looking for both representational and abstract works.

Statement from Alison Dean Cowitz:

I’m very excited to be part of this exhibit as it’s in my father’s home town of Sydney. I have many fond memories and visits from childhood to adult with family there. During the last year and a half, locked down with Covid has been stifling as an artist, as it has no doubt been for a lot of people in so many different ways. It’s an honour to be able to express and show work towards the theme “Commotion”. I hope you can take a look at the catalogue here and my piece ACE Accumulated Creative Energy found below.

ACE (Accumulated Creative Energy)

34”w x 39”h

This piece is a cyclone of creative energy. This personal expression is unsettled by design, much like the idea of commotion. My colourful and unbalanced art shows a swirl of frightening chaotic movement. Like the events of 2020, the marks go in circles with no ending. The colour calms the chaos and is my energy that powers through and signifies my determination to overcome the nonsense.
